Restaurant and Bar
The Mud Ruins Bar and Restaurant is a reason in itself to visit our campsite – warm, cosy and filled with character and atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to sample our delectable farm-fresh offerings, or recline in the comfort of our cosy sofas and coal stoves as you mingle with fellow travellers and Iringa residents. Try one of our famous Hot Chocolate Amarulas with a home-baked cake – or sample something from our well-stocked range of wines and cold beverages.
Taking its name from the ruins of an old house, the building has stood for over 70 years, sturdily built in traditional Kihehe compressed mud layers. Abandoned and without the shelter of a roof, the elements engraved their imprint on the walls, and added to the unique charm of the structure. In transforming it into a restaurant, Nicky’s only alterations were the addition of a floor and a thatched roof, and the artful use of lanterns and candles to highlight the natural ambiance and rustic elegance of this charismatic ruin.
Separated into a series of rooms, there are candlelit nooks and crannies for intimate dinners, as well as ample space for bigger groups to dine together. Set in a lovely garden, breakfast outdoors among the flowers and birds is a wonderful way to start the day.
Our cuisine comprises delicious, farm-fresh meals served with style and topped off with irresistible desserts – all designed to showcase our fantastic garden produce, and give you the welcome feeling of home away from home after a long stretch on the road.
We have also put together a menu for bigger groups traveling on a budget – and for those interested in sampling traditional local cuisine, we are happy to cater for you if you let us know by prior arrangement.
